Re-Training

Do you feel you need some retraining to get better job skills and more knowledge? If you have been determined by the One-Stop Career Center staff to have a skill that is no longer in demand, you may receive training in new skills.

Additionally, if you have received a permanent layoff notice, you may receive assistance and aid in finding a new job, or possible assistance with relocation to another area.

Talk to us and see how you might benefit from retraining, and the schools you can attend. Scroll down to learn more about the WIA programs and WIA Facilities and Schools.

 WIA PROGRAMS

SENIOR EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

Special funding is available to provide job training to seniors age 55 and up.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING (OJT)

Through On-the-Job Training, participants learn skills while working in entry level jobs. Employers call our office with job orders, and participants are referred to the job openings based on their interests and previous experience. The length of training can last from three to six months; at the end of the training, most participants are kept by the employer as a regular employee. OJT employees receive the same wages and benefits as regular employees holding the same or similar positions (benefits such as sick time, vacation pay, health insurance coverage, etc.) Some examples of previous OJT positions include (please note that these are examples only and may not be currently available for training):

  • Accounting clerk
  • Assembler
  • Auto mechanic
  • Baker
  • Cashier
  • Maintenance worker
  • Short order clerk
  • Forklift driver
  • Fabricator
  • Receptionist
  • Secretary
  • Warehouse worker
  • Welder

CLASSROOM TRAINING (CRT)

Through Classroom Training, participants learn job skills in a class setting. Most of the classes are available within commuting distance through various WIA-approved vocational colleges. Training may last from one month up to a year depending on the skills to be learned. Paid tuition as well as books and certain supplies will be covered up to the current maximum. At the successful completion of the program, participants receive a certificate and job placement assistance. Some examples of previous CRT placements follow.

Please note that the following are examples only and may not be currently available for training:

  • Secretary
  • Cosmetologist
  • Truck driver
  • Computer technician
  • Medical assistant
  • Automobile mechanic
  • Dental assistant
  • Laboratory assistant
  • Manicurist
  • Pharmacy technician
  • Heating and A/C technician
  • Accounting clerk

SUPPORT SERVICES

Support services such as child care, transportation reimbursement, and needs-based payment may be available to you during job training. Eligibility for these benefits are determined on a case-by-case basis. Auxiliary aids to accommodate persons with a disability will be made available upon request.

All programs and services are subject to availability of funds. Federal law says you do not have legal or entitlement rights to WIA-funded services. The mix and sequence of services will be planned jointly by you and your counselor.

 WIA FACILITIES AND SCHOOLS

Previous WIA participants have received training at the facilities listed below. All vocational schools must meet the required criteria for WIA training. Training possibilities are not limited to this list dependent upon additional vocational schools meeting WIA contract requirements and the location of the facility. There is an $5,000.00 maximum.
